Carolina's first intercollegiate football game was against Furman in December 1892. The team lacked a coach and paid for its own transportation and uniforms since the faculty had not approved the contest. Furman won 44-0.

Another team was formed in 1894 under the auspices of the Athletic Association of the South Carolina College but lost both of its games, too. 1895 proved to be more fruitful with a final record of 2wins and 1 loss including a 14-10 victory over Furman.

In 1896, under pressure from the student body, the faculty passed a resolution allowing intercollegiate athletics. A football squad was formed and W.A. Dixie Whaley was hired as the new coach.

1896 also marked the beginning of the annual game with Clemson. The game was originally set up as an attraction at the annual State Fair and was played on Thursday, November 12th. Carolina won, 12 0.

Due to concerns over player safety, the Board of Trustees abolished football in 1906 but reinstated it the following year.

Since that time, Carolina football has grown and now boasts one of the most loyal fan bases in the country.
